Northern Valley Career Expo a Success…

On Wednesday, October 24, over 1,200 sophomores from 20 schools across the region attended the first annual Northern Valley Career Expo.  The Expo was developed as a career development strategy to educate students on career pathways available within the region.

The event, held at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, consisted of an Exhibitor Showcase with over 100 exhibitor booths comprised of post-secondary programs and regional employers.  The exhibitors were organized by career cluster and provided hands-on experiences for the students such as using simulators and job-specific equipment.  Each exhibitor had representatives available to visit with students about their career interests and provide valuable information related to that career pathway.

In addition to the Exhibitor Showcase, each student attended breakout sessions consisting of expert panel presentations.  In total, their were seven breakout topics on specific career fields including Human Services, Health Sciences, Agriculture & Natural Resources, and Information Systems.  Students completed an interest inventory prior to registering for the event, so each student signed up for the breakout sessions that best aligned with their individual career interests.

Overall, the first annual Northern Valley Career Expo was a great success!  We are already looking forward to next year’s event, to be held on November 13, 2013 at the Alerus Center.
