 8th Grade Career Fairs

Playing with Preschoolers - Child Care

Every 8th grade student in the Grand Forks Consortium Schools (Grand Forks, Thompson, Larimore, Northwood, Central Valley, Emerado, Manvel) participates in a career fair as the culminating activity for their 8th grade career unit.  During the career unit, the 8th grade students take an interest inventory determining which career clusters are a good fit for them based on their academic and personal interests.  Students then get to choose four career areas they would like to learn more about during the career fair. Based on what the students sign up for, our Career Education Department then finds speakers from the community in those career areas.

Inserting an IV - Medical Services

The mornings of the career fairs are buzzing with excitement as students receive their schedules and complete a pre-career fair activity.  Each student attends four 25 minutes sessions.  During each session, the presenters from the community will share about their career field, including education requirements, skills needed for the job, helpful classes to take in high school, a typical day on the job, and the importance of good character in their job.

Jam Session - Musician

We encourage each of the presenters to have a hands-on activity for the 8th graders to experience some aspect of their job.  The cosmologists might style hair, the musicians bring instruments, child care workers bring children, and medical services might teach how to insert an IV.  The students enjoy getting to try out some of the different careers!

South Middle School hosted Thompson for their career fair on March 16, 2011.  Schroeder Middle School hosted Central Valley and Emerado on March 31, 2011.  Valley Middle School hosted Twinning, Manvel, Northwood and Larimore on April 8, 2011.
